Luke Pollard MP has welcomed a publication from the Key Cities Innovation Network, highlighting the opportunities that Pride in Place funding could unlock for communities in Devonport, Mount Wise and Morice Town.
Luke, who was interviewed as part of this research, praised the efforts of Plymouth City Council and the University of Plymouth who were instrumental in conducting it. It examined how communities can be empowered to take a greater role in shaping the future of their neighbourhoods, with Devonport, Mount Wise and Morice Town to receive £20 million over the next decade to be focused on the needs and wants of local residents.

“Pride in Place has been fantastic news for Plymouth. I’ve seen first-hand what it means to people across Devonport, Mount Wise and Morice Town, and residents have been clear about the changes they want to see in their communities.
“After hosting public meetings and running surveys to get the views of local residents, it is clear that people in Plymouth want investment that supports local businesses, restores historic buildings, improves public spaces and transport links, delivers more accessible services, increases affordable housing and creates better opportunities for young people. These are ambitions that come directly from local communities, and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has filled in my survey and shared their views with me.
“Regeneration works best when it is done with local people, not to them. That means listening to communities, focusing on their needs, and putting power in the hands of those impacted by decision-making.”
Luke said the findings reflected the Government’s commitment to devolution and empowering communities to shape their own future, as Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasises the need to move power out of Whitehall and SW1 into local areas.
