Labour is bringing crucial NHS mental health support directly into our local neighbourhood, ensuring people across Plymouth get help early before reaching a crisis point.
- A brand-new NHS mental health emergency department is set to open in Plymouth, offering walk-in support without a long wait or the need for a GP referral.
- Part of a national rollout of 159 new facilities across England, designed to shift care away from overcrowded hospital wards and into the community.
- The initiative will bring specialist NHS teams, Plymouth City Council services, local housing officers, and Plymouth’s voluntary sector under one roof.
I am delighted to share that Plymouth has been selected as one of the key areas across England to benefit from the Labour Government’s £343 million investment in community mental health.
For too long, I have heard from people right across Plymouth who have felt left behind by a mental health system at breaking point. Too many of our neighbours, friends, and family members are left waiting months for an appointment, only finding help when they reach a complete breakdown and end up in a busy A&E department at Derriford Hospital.
This new community mental health hub in Plymouth will change that. By opening up walk-in access to specialist care right in our local area, we are making sure people can get support the very first time they ask for it.
"Mental health support shouldn't depend on waiting until you hit rock bottom. Bringing these services directly into Plymouth means early support, shorter waits, and better care closer to home." - Luke Pollard MP
Transforming Adult Mental Health Services
Demand for mental health support has risen sharply in recent years, affecting around one in five adults across our city. This new hub represents the largest redesign of adult mental health services in a generation, focusing on early intervention and joined-up care.
Instead of navigating a fragmented system, local residents visiting the new centre will find a team of experts working together under one roof, including:
- NHS Mental Health Specialists for immediate guidance and therapy options.
- GPs & Community Care Teams working side-by-side with health professionals.
- Housing & Employment Support to address the root causes of anxiety and stress.
- Plymouth’s Voluntary & Community Sector providing localized, ongoing care.
A Wider Mission for Prevention
This local investment directly supports the Government’s wider plan to move our health service away from emergency crisis management and toward long-term prevention.
Alongside 100 new community centres nationwide, the plan introduces 59 dedicated mental health emergency departments across England, including right here in Plymouth, to ensure those needing urgent support receive care in a specialized environment tailored to their needs.
This local rollout is an integral step toward our forthcoming national Mental Health Strategy, which will look at how schools, employers, local councils, and voluntary groups can work together to build a healthier, more resilient city.
