- City College Plymouth to receive £1.67 million for building upgrades and repairs
- Investment will improve facilities and create better learning environments for students
- Part of Labour’s plan to restore pride in further education and boost skills in Plymouth
Young people in Plymouth are set to benefit from major improvements at City College Plymouth, with £1.67 million secured as part of a national programme to upgrade further education buildings.
The funding will be used to repair and maintain college facilities – from fixing ageing infrastructure to improving learning environments – ensuring students and staff have the spaces they need to succeed.
City College Plymouth plays a vital role in the city, helping train the next generation of skilled workers in key sectors like construction, engineering, health and digital. This investment will support that mission by creating a more modern, accessible and reliable environment for learning.
This funding is part of a £307 million national investment to improve college buildings, alongside a wider £1.7 billion commitment to modernise further education estates by 2030.
It means fewer disruptions to lessons, better facilities for students, and a college environment that reflects the importance of the skills being taught inside it.
This sits alongside wider reforms to strengthen technical education, expand apprenticeships, and ensure more young people can access high-quality training routes – helping to drive growth in Plymouth and across the country.
Luke Pollard, Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, said:
“City College Plymouth is at the heart of skills and opportunity in our city, and I’m really pleased to see this investment coming in.
“For too long, colleges across the country have had to make do with buildings that simply haven’t kept pace with the ambitions we have for our young people. That’s been a real barrier – not just to learning, but to unlocking opportunity.
“Plymouth’s future depends on the skills of our young people. Whether it’s engineering, construction, healthcare or digital, City College is helping train the workforce our city needs.
“This investment is about backing them — and restoring pride in our college.”
Jackie Grubb, Chief Executive & Principal of City College Plymouth, said:
“We welcome this vital national investment into our sector, which will support much needed upgrades to buildings and help us ensure safe, modern learning environments. Like every college we strive to provide the best learning environment for our students, so maintaining our assets is essential to ensure facilities meet the needs of students, staff and employers. High-quality environments have a direct impact on learners’ experience, wellbeing and outcomes, and this funding will help us make targeted improvements where they are needed most.”
The funding forms part of Labour’s wider plan to transform the skills system – including expanding access to apprenticeships, improving technical education routes, and ensuring more young people can go on to skilled careers or higher education.
