For many of us in Plymouth and South East Cornwall, the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry aren’t just pieces of infrastructure-they are essential lifelines. Whether it’s getting to work, taking the kids to school, or attending vital medical appointments, these crossings are a daily reality.
That is why I have joined forces with Anna Gelderd MP (South East Cornwall) and Fred Thomas MP (Plymouth Moor View) to submit a joint response to the ongoing consultation regarding the proposed Tamar Tag administration fee increase.
Earlier this year, we successfully lobbied the Joint Committee to reverse their initial decision to hike the monthly Tamar Tag fee from 80p to £2.00. While that was a significant win, the threat of rising costs for regular users remains a serious concern.
In our joint letter, we have been clear that affordability is non-negotiable. At a time when the cost of living remains a heavy burden, we cannot support measures that penalise those who rely most on the crossing. We are also demanding transparency, ensuring any future changes are backed by a robust evidence base.
“Residents depend on this crossing for their livelihoods. No one should be priced out of accessing their own community or essential services.”
The formal consultation on the Tamar Tag administration fee is still open, but time is running out. This is your chance to make your voice heard and tell the Committee how these charges impact your life and your budget. The consultation closes on Monday, 6th April 2026. You can complete the survey online via the Tamar Crossings Consultation Portal.
We are stronger when we speak with one voice. Anna, Fred, and I will continue to fight for a fairer deal for our region, but we need your input to bolster our case. Please take five minutes to respond before the deadline. Together, let’s keep the Tamar moving-fairly.
