As a nation of animal lovers, how we treat our pets, farm animals, and wildlife is a true reflection of our values. I am delighted to share that the Government has just launched the most ambitious Animal Welfare Strategy in a generation. This landmark plan, introduced on 22nd December, is designed to end cruel practices that have no place in modern Britain. For years, I have campaigned for stronger protections for sentient beings-including during my time as Shadow Environment Secretary, where I pushed for the recognition of animal sentience and stronger sentences for animal cruelty. This new strategy delivers on our promises with a clear roadmap for change by 2030.
One of the most significant shifts involves protecting our pets by finally ending the horrific practice of puppy farming. By reforming breeding laws and curbing low-welfare practices, we will ensure that puppies are born into healthy, caring environments. We are also consulting on a ban on electric shock collars and introducing new licensing for rescue centres to ensure every animal gets the start it deserves.
Our wildlife will also see a massive step forward in protection through the banning of cruel snare traps and trail hunting, which has too often been used as a “smokescreen” for illegal activity. Additionally, the strategy supports our farming community by moving away from confinement systems like caged hens and pig farrowing crates, ensuring that higher welfare standards lead to healthier livestock and better outcomes for farmers. This builds on the recently passed Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act 2025, which gives police greater powers and tougher penalties to tackle the emotional and financial strain of livestock worrying.
Whether it’s ending the scourge of puppy smuggling or ensuring our wildlife can thrive, these reforms are a vital step forward for animal protection in Plymouth Sutton and Devonport.
