Yesterday I hosted a public meeting of leaseholders at Devonport Market Hall.
I wanted to listen to the experiences of people affected by poor leaseholds. There’s some really bad managing agents in Plymouth and too many people who own leasehold properties are struggling to get the very basics out of their managing agents and freeholders.
My team and I are working on more than 30 buildings and developments in Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, trying to get leaseholders their basic rights.
There’s a lot of work to do. I’m working with Ministers to look at the legislation around this. In the meantime, we have a lot of people who shared their stories at the meeting about their frustration with the system.
People have every right to be angry with the broken leasehold system. It’s why the Labour government is taking steps to change that. And it’s why my team and I are working to get people the services and protections that should be provided to them.
There’s a lot of work still to do here but I’m grateful for everyone who came along to this public meeting. I know that, because we had reached capacity, there were leaseholders who weren’t able to attend this public meeting. So, I’ll be holding a second meeting for these folks shortly. If you’d like to be added to the waiting list, please email me at [email protected]
If you’re a leaseholder in my patch, please do also consider submitting your views to the government consultation, as well as my own survey. Click here for more information.
