Labour government to increase defence spending to 2.5% by April 2027

he first duty of any government is to keep our country safe.

The Prime Minister has committed to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP from April 2027, with an ambition to reach 3% of GDP in the next Parliament.

The Prime Minister’s commitment to boost defence spending is not only vital for national security. It is also good news for jobs and economic growth in Plymouth and across the south west, from Devonport to our SMEs.

The last time that the UK spent 2.5% of GDP on defence was in 2010 with a Labour government. The Conservatives failed to spend 2.5% of GDP on defence in any of their fourteen years in government between 2010 and 2024.
